Carl Katter Bridge Replacement

Curry Project Management oversaw the Carl Katter Bridge Replacement project on Ernest Henry Road, Cloncurry, QLD. The project involved the demolition of the existing bridge and the construction of a new, realigned, and elevated two-lane road bridge. CPM was responsible for managing the design process, procuring the Principal Contract through a tender process, and acting as the superintendent throughout the project.

Key areas of responsibility included:

  • Managing the demolition of the existing bridge and overseeing the construction of a new, realigned bridge with an elevated two-lane roadway for improved traffic flow and safety.
  • Overseeing the construction of new embankments and approaches to the bridge, ensuring proper alignment and elevation.
  • Ensuring that the bridge approaches were bitumen-sealed, and the bridge deck was finished with an asphalt wearing course for durability and longevity.

Specific Responsibilities Under the Contract

The project management team was tasked with:

  • Managing the safe demolition of the existing bridge, ensuring minimal disruption to surrounding areas and adherence to environmental standards.
  • Substructure and Piling Works: Overseeing the construction of the bridge’s substructure, including piling with 6–900mm diameter bored in-situ piles, with a 7m rock socket length, ensuring compliance with TMR specifications and standards.
  • Managing the installation of 17 pre-stressed concrete girders for the new bridge deck, ensuring proper alignment and structural integrity.
  • Supervising the construction of new embankments and the approaches to the bridge, ensuring proper grading, drainage, and alignment.
  • Overseeing the bitumen sealing of the approaches and the application of an asphalt wearing course on the bridge deck, designed with a crown and 3% crossfall for proper water runoff.

Procurement and Delivery
CPM managed the procurement process for the Carl Katter Bridge Replacement, ensuring that:

  • The tender process selected contractors capable of delivering high-quality construction work in compliance with TMR standards and local requirements.
  • Local suppliers and resources were used where possible, ensuring efficient project delivery and supporting the local economy.
  • Regular site visits and inspections were conducted to ensure that all construction works adhered to the project’s quality, safety, and environmental standards.

Submissions and Compliance
CPM managed the submissions and compliance process, ensuring that:

  • All design and construction documentation, including pre- and post-construction evidence, was accurately submitted to the Cloncurry Shire Council and relevant authorities.
  • CPM prepared monthly progress reports outlining the key milestones achieved, project expenditures, and any scope adjustments required during construction.

Contractor Coordination

The project management team ensured that the contractor:

  • Completed Piling and Substructure Works: Safely executed the piling and substructure construction, adhering to design specifications and TMR standards for structural stability.
  • Installed Precast Deck Units: Successfully installed the precast deck units, ensuring precise placement and securing the girders to the substructure.
  • Constructed Approaches and Sealing: Ensured that both approaches were constructed to the proper height and alignment, with bitumen-sealed surfaces and a durable asphalt layer on the bridge deck.

As-Built Construction Data
CPM ensured that detailed as-built records were maintained throughout the Carl Katter Bridge Replacement project, documenting the construction of the substructure, piling, and deck installation. These records were crucial for verifying that the bridge met the required standards and specifications. The as-built data was submitted to Cloncurry Shire Council and relevant stakeholders, ensuring full compliance with TMR guidelines and the project’s contractual obligations.

Reporting and Acquittal
CPM ensured that all project reporting was completed in compliance with project specifications and TMR requirements, including:

  • Detailed reports tracking the project’s progress, expenditures, and key milestones were submitted to Cloncurry Shire Council.
  • Once the project was completed, CPM lodged the final acquittal report, including evidence of completed works, final costs, and as-built documentation.

The Carl Katter Bridge Replacement successfully delivered a modern, resilient bridge that met TMR specifications, improving traffic safety and infrastructure longevity in Cloncurry.
